Council to decide whether to appoint two candidates or hold November election
The Hillsborough City Council is holding a special meeting to consider appointing Jeff Baxter and Leslie Marden Ragsdale to fill two City Council seats, rather than holding the November 3, 2026 election. Only two candidates filed nomination papers, so the Council may either appoint them or proceed with the election, which would cost $43,000–$51,000. The agenda includes only this one new business item, along with standard procedural items.
- Resolution to appoint Jeff Baxter and Leslie Marden Ragsdale to City Council
- Option to cancel November 3, 2026 election, saving $43,000–$51,000
- If appointed, Baxter and Ragsdale take office in December 2026
- Election would cost $43,000–$51,000 and allow write-in candidates
- Teleconference participation by Councilmember Ragsdale from Galway, Ireland
