Study Session: School Reorganization #3
SFUSD board studies school reorganization options ahead of Oct 13 decision
The San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education holds a study session on school reorganization, covering elementary and TK-8 student assignment and citywide program placement. Staff will share community engagement results and present implementation considerations, impacts, and trade-offs for remaining policy options, then seek board guidance to narrow options before an October 13 decision milestone. The board also takes up two action items on teacher credentialing: Provisional Intern Permit applications and Local Assignment Options. The reorganization is tied to declining enrollment and a 2020 zone-based assignment policy, Board Policy 5101.2, that was never implemented.
- Study session on School Reorganization #3: staff present community engagement results and trade-offs for remaining policy options, seeking board guidance before the October 13 decision milestone
- Action: approval of Provisional Intern Permit (PIP) applications to fill vacant certificated teaching positions
- Action: approval of Local Assignment Options allowing credentialed teachers to teach outside their authorized areas
- Reorganization would address elementary and TK-8 student assignment and language and citywide program placement, with full effect proposed for school year 2028-29
- Board Policy 5101.2, a zone-based elementary assignment policy adopted in December 2020, was never implemented; elementary assignment continues under citywide choice with tiebreakers
