SFUSD board discusses school reorganization, holds closed sessions
The San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education held three meetings in the past two weeks, but no decisions have been reported. The most consequential item was a study session on a proposed school reorganization initiative, which the board discussed but did not vote on. All three meetings were agenda-only, with minutes not yet published.
Study session on school reorganization
On Aug. 18, the board held a study session to discuss a proposed School Reorganization Initiative. The board considered the problem, scope, and priorities for changing elementary and TK-8 student assignment, including a zone-based policy adopted in December 2020 but never implemented. The initiative aims to take full effect in the 2028-29 school year.
The discussion covered Board Policy 5101.2, the zone-based elementary student assignment policy, as well as language pathway placement and citywide program placement. Staff stated that the initiative does not include school closures at scale, changes for currently enrolled students, or design of middle and high school enrollment policy. Staff proposed a series of study sessions, subject to change based on board feedback.
Regular meeting Aug. 11
The board held a regular meeting on Aug. 11, starting with a closed session at 5:00 p.m. and an open session at 6:30 p.m. The closed session included discussions on anticipated and existing litigation, labor negotiations with multiple unions, a student expulsion matter, and public employee discipline and performance evaluation of the Superintendent. The open session included public comment, reports from the superintendent and student delegates, and a consent calendar. The agenda was largely procedural, with no specific policy decisions or contracts listed.
Special closed session Aug. 18
On Aug. 18, the board also held a special closed session to discuss anticipated litigation, labor negotiations with employee organizations, and a performance evaluation of the Superintendent. By law, the board cannot comment on these matters, but any actions taken will be reported after the meeting. Public comment was limited to closed session agenda items. The meeting was held in person at 555 Franklin Street, San Francisco.
