Edgewood Council to vote on alarm ordinance, $814K in spending next week

No formal decisions were made at Edgewood's four public meetings over the past two weeks, as all were agenda-only sessions with minutes not yet published. The most consequential action will come Tuesday, when the City Council is scheduled to vote on an alarm-system ordinance and approve $814,708.36 in budgeted expenditures.

Planning Commission (Aug. 10)

The commission held a public hearing on a comprehensive plan and zoning map amendment for West Valley Highway (25-001-COMP PLAN). It also took up action items on concurrency code updates and the multi-family tax exemption (MFTE), and discussed a second zoning amendment for Schober (25-002-COMP PLAN) and a review of landscaping standards. Public comment was limited to three minutes per speaker.

City Council (Aug. 11)

The council held a public hearing on AB26-116, which would amend city code on electric alarm systems, fencing, and retaining walls. The consent agenda included approval of August 2026 budgeted expenditures totaling $555,278.26, broken down as $195,249.18 for benefit trusts, payroll, and retirement systems and $360,029.08 for vendor checks and EFT payments. The council also considered approving minutes from July 14, July 21, and July 28, 2026.

Parks and Recreation Advisory Board (Aug. 12)

The board discussed an Eagle Scout project, a windmill update, an outdoor movie night, a flagpole at Edgewood Community Park, and ideas for the east end of the park. No action was taken.

City Council Study Session (Aug. 18)

The council reviewed upcoming business, including the same alarm/fencing/retaining wall code amendments, a contract for the Mt. View Community Center heating and cooling system, a contract amendment with Miles Resources LLC, updates from the Economic Development Advisory Board, and a parliamentarian discussion. The session was informational only; no formal action was taken.

City Council – Aug. 25, 2026

The council will consider approving August 2026 budgeted expenditures of $814,708.36, including vendor checks and EFT payments. It will also consider Resolution 26-0800 authorizing the mayor to sign a change order for the 48th Street East Preservation Project, and will discuss and potentially vote on Ordinance 26-0714, which would amend Edgewood Municipal Code Title 18 regarding electric security alarm systems. The agenda includes a presentation from the Pierce County Library System and approval of minutes from the Aug. 11 and Aug. 18 meetings.

Salary Commission – Aug. 31

The Salary Commission will nominate and vote for a chair and determine 2027 salary levels for elected officials.

Edgewood Council Rejects Committee of the Whole Format for Advisory Interviews; Planning Commission and Council Set for Key Votes

The Edgewood City Council's only finalized decision in the past two weeks was a vote against changing how advisory body interviews are conducted. Meanwhile, the Planning Commission and City Council have scheduled reviews of comprehensive plan amendments, a business licensing ordinance, and more than $838,000 in budgeted expenditures — though minutes for those meetings have not yet been published.

Council Rejects Committee of the Whole Format (July 7)

On July 7, the City Council considered a motion to conduct future advisory body interviews in a Committee of the Whole format. The motion was moved by Councilmember Keith and seconded by Deputy Mayor Creley. The motion failed. No other decisions were made during the meeting.

Planning Commission to Consider Two Comprehensive Plan Amendments (July 13)

The Edgewood Planning Commission was scheduled July 13 to review and vote on two comprehensive plan and zoning map amendments:

• The Schober amendment (item 25-002-COMP PLAN)
• The West Valley Highway amendment (item 25-001-COMP PLAN)

The commission was also set to consider updates to the concurrency code, multifamily tax exemption policies, and landscaping standards. An action item addressed code amendments for electric alarm systems, fencing, and retaining walls. Public comment was to be accepted on any agenda items not listed.
