Brevard County roundup: No major decisions in past two weeks; county to set fees Tuesday

Brevard County Commission weighs utility rate hikes, data center tax exemption ban

Brevard County commissioners met four times in the past two weeks to consider utility rate adjustments, a data center tax exemption ban, zoning changes, and water district fees. County Commission: Utility rates and data center tax exemptions

At its Aug. 4 meeting, the Board of County Commissioners took up an amendment to its utility services rate resolution that would adjust connection fees for the South Beaches, Merritt Island, North Brevard, Port St. John, and South Central Mainland service areas. The board also considered an ordinance to make data centers ineligible for economic development ad valorem tax exemptions, a change to Chapter 102 of the county code.

Other items on that agenda included final plat and contract approval for Links at Indian River Preserve in District 1, a proposed donation of real property from the Barefoot Bay Water and Sewer District to the county for a new advanced water and wastewater treatment facility, and revisions to Board Policy BCC-23 on safeguarding county-owned property.

County Commission: Zoning and land-use hearings

On Aug. 6, the board held public hearings on 13 zoning and land-use changes, including several small-scale comprehensive plan amendments and rezonings across multiple districts. Among the requests:

• Cocoa Town Center LLC seeks to change future land use from CC to RES 15 and rezone from BU-1 to RU-2-15 (Tax Accounts 2407572, 2407578, District 2).
• Sami & Violette Salib request a comprehensive plan amendment from NC and RES 2 to CC and rezoning from AU to BU-1 (Tax Accounts 2000371, 2000352, District 1).
• BT Rodes LLC - Padgett Properties Trust requests a comprehensive plan amendment from RES 6 to CC and rezoning from BU-1-A and AU to BU-2 (Tax Accounts 2800696, 2800697, District 5).

Brevard County commissioners are scheduled to vote July 21 on proposed FY 2026-2027 property tax millages and consider a loan of up to $17 million for the Environmental Endangered Lands Program, according to the upcoming meeting agenda. The same session includes a public hearing on an ordinance to sunset the Barefoot Bay Water & Sewer District at the end of 2029.
