E-Bike

New Smyrna Beach workshop weighs e-bike rules, fines up to $150

New Smyrna Beach is holding a public workshop on a proposed ordinance to regulate e-bikes and similar motorized devices. The proposal would require riders to stay in designated lanes, yield to pedestrians, allow the City Manager to restrict use in high-pedestrian areas, require helmets for riders and passengers ages 16 and 17, and ban such devices from city parks and courts unless signed otherwise. Civil fines would be $25 for helmet violations and $150 for a first other violation, with possible device seizure for repeat violations. The city reports 20 e-bike citations, 14 e-moto citations and 4 traditional bicycle citations in one year, plus 19 e-bike crashes and 9 traditional bicycle crashes.
