The City Council is the City of Danville’s legislative body and is composed of nine Council members. Council
members are elected to serve a four year term of office and elects one of its own to serve as Mayor and presiding
officer for a two year term.
Time and Place of Meeting
The public is invited and encouraged to attend and participate in the City Council meetings. The City Council
meets in the City Hall, Fourth Floor, Council Chambers at 7:00 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month.
All meetings of the Council are open to the public.

Communication from Visitors is an opportunity for citizens, who have signed up to speak at

The Second August meeting of the Danville City Council was held on August 18, 2026, at 7:00
p.m. in the Council Chambers located on the Fourth Floor of the Municipal Building, 427 Patton
Street, Danville, Virginia. The following Council Members were present: Vice Mayor James B.
Buckner, L.G. “Larry” Campbell Jr., Bryant Hood, Mayor Alonzo L. Jones, Daniel W. Marshall,
Barry P. Mayo, Gary P. Miller, Sherman M. Saunders, and J. Lee Vogler, Jr. (9).
Staff Members present were: City Manager Ken Larking, Deputy City Manager Earl B. Reynolds,
Jr., Assistant City Manager/CFO Michael Adkins, Assistant City Manager Briana Evans, City
Attorney W. Clarke Whitfield, Jr., and City Clerk Susan M. DeMasi.

Council Member Sherman M. Saunders gave the Invocation followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
Mayor Jones asked City Manager Ken Larking to give an update. Mr. Larking stated, I wanted to
let the public know that the city will soon be issuing a request for proposal seeking input from
qualified firms with expertise in the full range of companion animal services, including animal
control, public health related responsibilities, shelter operations and animal welfare programs.
The goal is to evaluate best practices and to identify opportunities to strengthen the services we
provide to our community. This effort will be conducted in close collaboration with the Danville

The Danville-Pittsylvania Regional Industrial Facility Authority is holding a special called meeting to consider a resolution authorizing up to $10,000 for a reception honoring the late Timothy Saunders, a Navy sailor killed in service, and to install a memorial plaque near the entrance of the Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing building in Cyber Park. The public is invited and encouraged to attend and participate in the City Council meetings. The City Council
meets in the City Hall, Fourth Floor, Council Chambers at 7:00 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month.
All meetings of the Council are open to the public.

The Regular August meeting of the Danville City Council was held on August 4, 2026, at 7:00 p.m.
in the Council Chambers located on the Fourth Floor of the Municipal Building, 427 Patton Street,
Danville, Virginia. The following Council Members were present: Vice Mayor James B. Buckner,
L.G. “Larry” Campbell Jr., Bryant Hood, Mayor Alonzo L. Jones, Barry P. Mayo, Sherman M.
Saunders, J. Lee Vogler, Jr., and Daniel W. Marshall (8). Dr. Gary P. Miller was absent (1).
Staff Members present were: City Manager Ken Larking, Deputy City Manager Earl B. Reynolds,
Jr., Assistant City Manager/CFO Michael Adkins, Assistant City Manager Briana Evans, City
Attorney W. Clarke Whitfield, Jr., and City Clerk Susan M. DeMasi.

Mr. Ryan Dodson from the City Attorney’s office called the meeting to order and held the
Chairman and Vice Chairman elections. Mr. Shanks nominated Ms. Kautzman to the office
of Chairman. Hearing no other nominations, Mr. Dodson closed the nominations. All
members voted in favor and the nomination passed unanimously. Ms. Kautzman nominated
Mr. Shanks to the office of Vice Chairman. Hearing no other nominations, Mr. Dodson closed
the nominations. All members voted in favor, and the nomination passed.

Ms. Kautzman asked for any corrections, deletions, or adjustments to the minutes from April

The public is invited and encouraged to attend and participate in the City Council meetings. The City Council
meets in the City Hall, Fourth Floor, Council Chambers at 7:00 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month.
All meetings of the Council are open to the public.
Communications from Visitors
Communication from Visitors is an opportunity for citizens, who have signed up to speak at
www.danvilleva.gov/council or by contacting the Office of the City Clerk, to address Council on matters not on the

The Regular July meeting of the Danville City Council was held on July 7, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. in
the Council Chambers located on the Fourth Floor of the Municipal Building, 427 Patton Street,
Danville, Virginia. The following Council Members were present: Vice Mayor James B. Buckner,
L.G. “Larry” Campbell Jr., Bryant Hood, Mayor Alonzo L. Jones, Daniel W. Marshall, Barry P.
Mayo, Gary P. Miller, and J. Lee Vogler, Jr. (8). Sherman M. Saunders was absent (1).
Staff Members present were: City Manager Ken Larking, Deputy City Manager Earl B. Reynolds,
Jr., Assistant City Manager/CFO Michael Adkins, Assistant City Manager Briana Evans, City
Attorney W. Clarke Whitfield, Jr., and City Clerk Susan M. DeMasi.
Mayor Jones presided.
