Danville boards to consider airport fees, road projects, property deals

City Council

Regional Industrial Facility Authority

The authority's Aug. 10 meeting considered improvements in an option area for Middle Mile Infrastructure LLC on 9.82 acres at Cane Creek Centre (Lot 12, GPIN 2347-13-8189) and a financial status report as of July 31, 2026. A special called meeting on Aug. 17 considered a resolution authorizing up to $10,000 for a reception and memorial plaque for the late Timothy Saunders, a Navy sailor killed in service, near the entrance of the Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing building in Cyber Park.

Planning Commission

The Planning Commission's Aug. 10 agenda included a code amendment to the Unified Development Code for the Entertainment and Gaming District (PZ26-00407) and a special use permit for indoor commercial recreation at 616 North Main Street (PZ26-00380). It also reviewed a subdivision plat at Sandy Court.

Airport Commission

The Airport Commission's Aug. 11 meeting included updates on the Erosion Control Mitigation Project, Corporate Hangar Site Prep Construction, an Air Ambulance Modular building, the Aviation Training Facility Building and Hangar projects, and the South Ramp site prep construction project.

Architectural Review Board

The board's Aug. 13 agenda included five Certificates of Appropriateness: two Virginia State Historic Highway Markers at 100 Memorial Drive, a mural on the retaining wall along the 400 block of Memorial Drive, an awning at 319 Craghead Street, and siding and window replacement at 148 Sutherlin Avenue.

Danville's recent City Council and Utility Commission meetings are on the public record only as agendas so far — minutes have not been published, so outcomes of votes and discussions are not yet confirmed. Danville boards weigh $8M substation, $6M Megasite grant in busy two-week stretch

Danville City Council and several regional boards packed their July agendas with major spending items, including an $8 million electric substation at the former Morgan Olson facility and a $6 million grant to extend natural gas infrastructure at the Southern Virginia Megasite at Berry Hill. City Council: $8M substation, HUD grant, tax changes

On July 7, City Council's agenda included a first reading to transfer $8,000,000 from the Electric Fund balance to build a new substation at the former Morgan Olson facility. The same meeting listed final adoption of a $1,742,000 HUD grant to rehabilitate 351 Holbrook Street, final adoption of revisions to the real estate tax exemption and deferral program for elderly and disabled residents, and final adoption of a reduction in curbside recycling fees effective July 1, 2026. Special use permits for adult daycare at 633 Newton Street and 206 Bell Drive and a wireless facility at 710 Grove Street were also on the agenda.

Regional Industrial Facility Authority: $6M Megasite grant

The Danville-Pittsylvania Regional Industrial Facility Authority met July 13 with an agenda that included ratifying a Local Performance Agreement with SAC III Acquisition Co., LLC, authorizing negotiation of a subdivision plat for the Megasite at Berry Hill, and considering a $6,000,000 Virginia Business Ready Site Program Grant to extend natural gas infrastructure at the site. The authority also planned to discuss bylaw amendments on agenda setting and special meetings and review a financial status report as of June 30, 2026.

Planning Commission: River Oak Drive rezoning conditions

The Planning Commission met July 13 to hold a public hearing on Application PZ26-00363 from Blackstone Building Group, LLC, which seeks to remove conditions imposed by Ordinance 2024-03.04 on a previously approved rezoning at River Oak Drive. The agenda also included approval of minutes from the June 8, 2026 meeting and a report from the Planning Director.

Architectural Review Board: three certificates

The Industrial Development Authority met July 14 with agenda items including approval of a White Mill condominium association action, renewal of a lease for Morrisette Paper Company at 979 Lockett Drive, an assignment and assumption agreement for AAL Investor, LLC, and a closed meeting to discuss real property acquisition and legal counsel.

Airport Commission: project updates

The Danville Airport Commission met July 14 to appoint a chairman and vice-chairman, approve minutes from June 9, 2026, and receive updates on five projects: erosion control, corporate hangar site preparation, an air ambulance modular building, an aviation training facility, and FBO management.
