Sustainability Committee
Committee reviews proposals for pay-as-you-throw trash and plastic waste reduction
The Framingham Sustainability Committee will hold a virtual meeting to review its annual goals and receive updates on the decarbonization plan and geothermal pilot expansion. The agenda includes a detailed discussion of five specific waste management proposals, ranging from a pay-as-you-throw system to banning single-use plastics at public events. No final votes on these items are scheduled, as the agenda lists them as topics for review and research.
- Review of a Pay-As-You-Throw (PAYT) trash collection system where households pay for bags instead of a flat fee
- Proposal to require waste plans, including reusable or compostable dishware, for public event permits
- Discussion of prohibiting restaurants from providing utensils, straws, or condiments without a customer request
- Consideration of expanding state mandatory recycling rules to include plastic for businesses
- Proposal to eliminate plastic and Styrofoam take-out containers, potentially starting with a voluntary highlight program for compostable options
