Vestavia Hills Council to consider FY2027 budget, police off-duty rules

The Vestavia Hills City Council met Aug. 17 with an agenda that included the city manager's presentation of the FY2027 budget, a bid for athletic field maintenance, and public hearings on ordinances covering police off-duty employment and final adoption of the FY2026 and FY2027 budgets. The board also received updates on fall sports, senior programs, and maintenance, and heard league reports and citizen comments. Its next regular meeting is set for Sept. 15, 2026.

Board of Zoning Adjustment

The Board of Zoning Adjustment met Aug. 20 to hold a public hearing and vote on a request for a 35-foot front setback variance at 612 Eastwood Place, zoned R-3. The variance would reduce the required setback from 50 feet to 15 feet for a new house. The board also approved minutes from its July 16 meeting. The agenda noted prior approvals for similar variances at 2647 Alta Glen Drive (20-foot front setback variance to 55 feet) and 2108 Southwood Road (multiple front, side, and rear setback variances).

City Council — July 6

The Council held public hearings on six annexation requests, all first readings with no action scheduled that evening. The properties are 4616 Old Looney Mill Rd, 4737 Cloud Ln, 2949 Dolly Ridge Trl, 2421 Rocky Ridge Rd, 2504 Skyland Dr, and 1715 Collinwood Ct.

Additional public hearings covered an electronic signature policy for the city, a one-time bonus for retirees and beneficiaries for FY27, a bid for Sicard Hollow Athletic Complex infrastructure fill and tree clearing, and demolition of the building at 2750 Smyer Rd (funds not to exceed $55,000).
