Castle Valley weighs property tax increase; council to vote on budget
Castle Valley is considering a significant property tax increase, with a public hearing held Aug. 12 and a council vote scheduled for Aug. 19. No decisions have been published yet, as minutes from these meetings are not available.
Property tax increase proposed
The town held a public hearing Aug. 12 at the Town Building, 2 Castle Valley Dr., to consider raising property tax revenue. Two agenda items describe the proposal:
- The town would receive an additional $73,666 in annual property tax revenue.
- A separate agenda item states the tax rate would rise from .000864 to .001193, generating an estimated $75,000 in additional revenue.
- Property tax revenue would increase from $134,850 to $209,850, a 54.04% increase above last year's revenue, excluding eligible new growth.
- For a $459,000 residence, the tax would rise from $195.40 to $301.17. For a $459,000 business, it would rise from $355.27 to $547.59.
The hearing was hybrid, with in-person and Zoom options.
Council to vote on budget and tax rate
At its regular meeting Aug. 19 at the Community Center, the Town Council was scheduled to consider several resolutions, including:
- Resolution 2026-7 approving the Certified Tax Rate.
- Resolution 2026-8 approving the FY 2027 Budget, which includes the tax increase.
- Resolution 2026-9 adopting the 2025 Castle Valley Hazard Mitigation Plan.
The council also planned to consider amendments to Ordinance 83-3 Chapter 4 Section 4.2 (D) regarding farm stands, and a road department purchase order for CAT transmission oil at $2,449.70.
Water Advisory Committee meets
The Water Advisory Committee met Aug. 10 to discuss water management priorities. The agenda included appointing a co-chair, a presentation by Emily Lewis on water marketing strategies, and a review of the Water Management Plan Priority Action List. Items on that list include water rights, well metering, Castle Creek, aquifer monitoring, non-potable water for cisterns, the Grand County Watershed Protection Overlay District, DRWi appropriations policy, and surplus water protection. The committee also approved minutes from its June 8, 2026 meeting.
