Iron County boards face busy week of zone changes, budget, and annexation
No decisions were made at Iron County meetings in the past two weeks; all recent agendas were published without minutes, and no votes were recorded. The County Commission and Planning Commission met on Aug. 10 and Aug. 13, respectively, but their agendas were limited to discussion and public hearings. The upcoming week, however, brings a full slate of items that could affect land use, county finances, and public services.
Recent meetings: agenda only
At the Aug. 10 County Commission meeting, the agenda included a proposed amendment to a temporary land use regulation, but no details were provided in the public notice. The commission also considered Ordinance 2026-18, which would clarify that the existing 180-day moratorium on data-center and solar-plant applications does not apply to battery energy storage systems with valid conditional use permits issued before May 26, 2026. Other agenda items included a presentation from Go Rail on freight rail, discussion of expanding the commission from three to five members, and possible approval of an annexation creating an island of annexed land in Cedar City. The commission also discussed a flood-response memorandum of understanding with Beaver County and a single-event permit for the Utah Wine Festival.
The Planning Commission met Aug. 13 for public hearings and a regular meeting. Topics included a zone change from RA-20 to R-1 for the Scott Day property, a conditional use permit for surface mining by Fleet Mining Services, and other land use matters. No votes were recorded.
Upcoming: County Commission, Aug. 24
The County Commission meets Monday, Aug. 24, at 9 a.m. in Parowan. The agenda includes a public hearing on Ordinance 2026-19, which would rezone 20 acres at 3831 W 4000 N in Cedar City from RA-20 to R-1. The commission will also hold a public hearing on mid-year budget adjustments and possible approval of Resolution 2026-5. Other items include approval of the Utah Indigent Defense Grant 27D18 (covering July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027), contracts for a public defense administrator, public defender, and social worker, and Resolution 2026-4 to amend property into the Iron Springs Inland Port Project Area. The board will also review a proposed annexation by Vantrust into Cedar City, creating an island of annexed land. Personnel actions are listed for the Sheriff's Office, Landfill, Attorney, Engineer, Parks and Recreation, Justice Court, and Roads.
Upcoming: Planning Commission, Sept. 3
The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on Sept. 3 at 5:30 p.m. at Festival Hall in Cedar City. The agenda includes a zone change from A-20 (agricultural) to Industrial for the Jones Land & Livestock property. Another hearing will consider a zone change from RA-20 to R-1/2 on 20.33 acres for PJT Harker, LLC. A conditional use permit for light industrial use on 20 acres (applicant: Charles Johnson) is also on the agenda. Finally, the commission will hear a zone change from Commercial to Residential 5-Acre (R-5) for the Plascencia property, which will also be considered by the County Commission on Sept. 14.
