South Salt Lake weighs $1.84M property tax increase as council readies rezoning vote
South Salt Lake officials held a public hearing this month on a proposed property tax increase that would add $1.84 million a year to city revenue, the largest item on the city's recent agenda. The City Council has not yet voted on the increase. The council is scheduled to act on a rezoning and an updated storm drainage plan at its August 26 meeting.
Property tax increase proposed
The Truth in Taxation hearing was held August 11 at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 220 E Morris Ave. If approved, the city would collect an additional $1,839,537 per year, a 12.99% increase over last year's property tax budgeted revenue excluding new growth. For a residence valued at $470,000, the annual tax would rise from $644.44 to $727.94 — an increase of $83.50. For a business valued at $470,000, the tax would rise from $1,171.71 to $1,323.52. Comments could be made in person or virtually, with instructions at sslc.gov. No vote has been recorded.
Fence project bids
The city is accepting bids for the SSLC 1300 East Fence Project, which involves furnishing and installing new fencing as specified in the project manual. Bids were due by 4 p.m. August 14 via Bonfire. A 5% bid security is required. No pre-bid meeting or public bid opening is scheduled. Contact: Ariel Andrus, 801-483-6019.
Council appointments and storm drainage plan
At its August 12 regular meeting, the City Council considered two mayoral appointments to the Planning Commission: Jason Terry as Alternate Planning Commissioner and Suzanne Slifka as Regular Planning Commissioner. The council also reviewed a Storm Drainage Master Plan presented by Kai Krieger of Hansen, Allen & Luce. Minutes from the June 10 work and regular meetings and the June 17 regular meeting were on the agenda for approval. A separate work meeting on the same day was limited to the two appointments. No decisions have been recorded.
Planning commission actions
On August 20, the Planning Commission held a public hearing on a preliminary condominium plat amendment for Lot 2 of the Market Center Subdivision at 2280 S State Street, submitted by Blaser Ventures. The commission may approve, deny, or continue the matter. It also approved minutes from its August 6 meeting. A separate work meeting on August 20 at 6:30 p.m. was dedicated to a training session on conditional use permits; no decisions or public hearings were scheduled.
