County committees advance $500,000 fleet contract increase, tax levy and health department privilege waiver

St. Clair County committees met on Oct. 1 and took up contracts, grants, appointments and a legal question involving the Health Department. Most items were forwarded to the Regular Board meeting for further action; one contract increase was approved outright. Fleet contract increase approved

The Ways and Means Committee approved an addendum to the Transdev Fleet Services contract, raising the not-to-exceed amount by $500,000 to a total of $2,366,839.18. The vote was 6-0. The same committee forwarded two items to the Regular Board meeting, each 6-0: Kevin's Lawn and Snow 2026-2027 Snow Plow/Salting Services, and Resolution 26-24 Imposing 2026 December Property Tax Levy.

Health Department privilege waived

The Human Services Committee voted 6-0 to waive attorney-client privilege on an October 1, 2026 letter from Fletcher Fealko Shoudy and Francis, P.C., concerning the Health Department. The committee heard public comments and a legal presentation regarding workplace culture at the Health Department involving Dr. Remington Nevin. The committee also forwarded four items to the Regular Board meeting, each 6-0: the Veterans Affairs 2026 Community Foundation Grant Application, the MSU Extension FY2027 Annual MOA Renewal, a Department of Human Services Board reappointment, and the 2027 County Veterans Service Fund Grant. Public safety items forwarded

Land, airport and landfill

The Environmental/Public Works Committee forwarded four items 6-0: the Airport Private Hangar Land Lease - Lot T-12; Electrical Services for Columbus County Parks Operation Center; Resolution 26-26 Natural Resources Trust Fund grant application; and a Brownfield Redevelopment Authority BOD Reappointment. The committee tabled a Brownfield Redevelopment Authority BOD Appointment 6-0, and forwarded a Materials Management Planning Committee Application 5-1. It received and filed the June 2026 Smiths Creek Landfill Volume Report 6-0.

Economic development discussion, no action

The Community and Economic Development Committee reviewed an update from Administrator Hull regarding economic development discussions with Greenwood, Marine City and Fort Gratiot. The committee approved its agenda 6-0 and received and filed packets and information 6-0. No substantive policy decisions or funding approvals were made.

Health board workshop on data centers

The St. Clair County Advisory Board of Health is conducting a workshop on the health and environmental effects of data center development. The meeting includes a presentation by Medical Director Remington Nevin and guest speaker Kristen Meghan Kelly. This is an agenda item; minutes have not yet been published.

County board approves $15.08M in July disbursements, contracts

The St. Clair County Board of Commissioners approved $15,081,012.55 in July 2026 county disbursements and multiple contracts at its Aug. 20 meeting. The board also approved a manning table change to replace a vacant nurse practitioner with a Deputy Medical Director, passing 5-1 with Commissioner Beedon dissenting. All other votes were unanimous 6-0.

Audit report received

In a special meeting also held Aug. 20, the board received and filed the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report for the year ending Dec. 31, 2025, after a presentation by UHY LLC. The report was accepted by a unanimous voice vote of 6-0. No other substantive decisions were made.

Advisory Board of Health

The St. Clair County Advisory Board of Health met Aug. 19 to discuss several public health topics, including an EPA update on fluoride, rural health grants, Title X family planning issues, and vaccine choice under a recent executive order. The board also heard updates from the Medical Director and Health Officer on mRNA influenza vaccine stocking, Cyclospora, and accreditation. No decisions were reported; minutes have not yet been published.
