Peoria boards to weigh budgets, officer roles, and board appointments

Peoria's advisory boards and commissions have a busy stretch of meetings ahead, though no final decisions have been made yet. All recent meetings are agenda-only, with minutes not yet published. The most consequential items on the table are the Historic Preservation Commission's proposed fiscal year 2027 work plan and officer elections, along with the Youth Advisory Board's budget review and officer role discussions. An upcoming subcommittee will interview candidates for two city boards.

Historic Preservation Commission (Aug. 19)

The Historic Preservation Commission is scheduled to discuss and possibly approve its Fiscal Year 2027 Work Plan and elect a chairperson and vice chairperson for the year. The agenda also includes a presentation on Arizona Open Meeting Law (discussion only), approval of the June 10, 2026, meeting minutes, and approval of Vice Chair John De La-O's absence from that meeting. No dollar amounts or vote tallies were listed.

Youth Advisory Board (Aug. 10)

The Youth Advisory Board held a special meeting on Aug. 10 to address several administrative items. The agenda included discussion and possible action on the Secretary and Treasurer roles and responsibilities, with possible direction to schedule officer elections; review and planning of the 2026-2027 Youth Advisory Board budget; and discussion and possible action to accept the resignation of board member Joshua Poll. The meeting also included opening remarks led by Vice Chair Anika Navghare and a call to the public. No substantive policy decisions were listed, and minutes have not yet been published.

Coming up: Boards and Commissions Subcommittee (Aug. 25)

The Board and Commission Subcommittee will meet on Aug. 25 to conduct interviews for potential appointments to the Parks and Recreation Board and the Veterans Board. The group will also review the City Clerk's Office work plan and approve the minutes from the June 9, 2026, City Council meeting. No dollar amounts, ordinances, or rezonings are on the agenda.

Peoria advisory boards hold early August meetings; decisions pending

Peoria's Veterans Board and Youth Advisory Board held meetings in early August to handle administrative items, set goals for the coming year, and elect officers. No decisions have been reported because minutes have not yet been published for any of the meetings.

Veterans Board

On Aug. 5, the Veterans Board met for a regular meeting. The agenda included discussion and possible action on nominees for the 2026 Duane Danner Award, the board's work plan for fiscal year 2027, and the nomination and election of a chairman and vice chairman for the next fiscal year. The board also considered approving an absence for board member Joshua Lyons from the June 3 meeting and reviewed Arizona Open Meeting Law. The agenda also included updates on upcoming events and future agenda items. No financial actions were listed.

Youth Advisory Board

The Youth Advisory Board and two of its committees held special meetings on Aug. 8.

Full board

The full board received Open Meeting Law training led by Assistant City Attorney David Hubband. Members discussed retreat action items, including member expectations, bylaws, and board goals, and participated in teambuilding activities facilitated by staff and board officers. The agenda also included informational reports from staff, council liaisons, and board members. The board also considered approving excused absences for Aditi Sekar, Akshathram Vemana, Anika Navghare, and Sarah Adamsha, and an unexcused absence for Jacob Houg from the June 9 meeting, as well as approving minutes from that meeting. The agenda did not include major policy decisions or financial actions.

Civic Engagement Committee

The Civic Engagement Committee met to approve minutes from March 30, set goals for 2026-2027, and elect a chair and vice chair. The committee also identified future agenda topics. The meeting was open to public comment, but the committee cannot act on non-agenda items until a later meeting.

Community Outreach Committee

The Community Outreach Committee met to approve unexcused absences for Aditi Sekar, Akshathram Vemana, Emma Kaheh, Jacob Houg, and Naureen Singh from the May 18 meeting, approve minutes from that meeting, set goals for 2026-2027, and elect a chair and vice chair. The agenda was largely routine administrative business with no major policy decisions.
