Newton committees weigh $1.9M housing grant, City Hall repairs; no votes taken
Newton's Public Facilities and Land Use committees met over the past two weeks to discuss a range of items, including a proposed $1.9 million affordable housing appropriation and a $232,000 City Hall repair project. No final decisions were made; minutes have not yet been published for any of the meetings.
Public Facilities Committee (Aug. 12)
The committee's agenda included a $232,000 Community Preservation Act appropriation for cupolas and windows at City Hall, a public hearing on an Eversource petition to install 60 feet and 450 feet of underground conduit and a manhole on Prescott Street, and a discussion of the "two-foot rule" that allows utility work to open streets without a new grant of location. The committee also discussed a request to explore legal pathways for Newton to control gas pipe installations.
Land Use Committee (Aug. 12)
The Land Use Committee held a hybrid public hearing on a special permit request to build 16 attached single-family homes at 93, 103, and 0 Thurston Road, with parking and setback relief. The hearing was continued from April 14 and May 12, 2026. The committee also considered a retaining wall exceeding four feet at 335 Langley Road, on a 20,092-square-foot lot zoned MR1, continued from June 2, 2026.
Public Facilities Committee (Aug. 19)
The committee discussed several appointments to the Design Review Committee, including reappointments of David Gillespie, Peter J. Barrer, and Carol S. Schein, and the appointment of Stacy Roman. It also held public hearings on a request to withdraw a petition to relocate a drain easement at 129 Rowe St, Auburndale, and on a National Grid grant of location for a regulator station at Commonwealth Ave @ Washington St. The agenda included a $1,900,000 appropriation of Community Preservation Act funds to the Newton Affordable Housing Trust, and a transfer of $623,130.15 in excess debt exclusion bond proceeds from the Cabot to Franklin construction projects.

On Aug. 25, the Land Use Committee will hold a hybrid public meeting to review four special permit and site plan approval petitions. These include a proposed four-story commercial building at 74 Needham Street (petition 225-26), a three-story addition at 99 Oakdale Road (petition 257-26), a four-unit residential conversion at 395 Lexington Street (petition 258-26), and retaining walls at 83 Commonwealth Park West (petition 259-26). The committee will consider requests for dimensional and parking waivers and other zoning relief.
