La Paz County boards weigh water district budget, tax levies, shelter proposal
The La Paz County Board of Supervisors held two meetings in August to consider the Desert Sky water district budget, county tax levies, and a proposal to shift shelter services. The Victim Compensation Board also met to review its finances. Minutes have not yet been published for any of these meetings, so outcomes are not yet known.
Desert Sky water district budget and rates
At an Aug. 11 special meeting, the Board of Supervisors acted as the Desert Sky Domestic Water Improvement District Board of Directors. The agenda included a public hearing on the district's annual budget and rates and fees for fiscal year 2026/27. The board considered approving the budget and two resolutions: DS2026-01 to adopt the FY 26/27 levy and collection of tax, and DS2026-02 to adopt FY 26/27 rates and fees.
County tax levies and shelter proposal
On Aug. 17, the Board of Supervisors held a public hearing and considered adopting the county's FY2026/27 tax levies. The board also considered a proposal from the Animal Relief Fund to assume shelter services. The consent agenda included routine approvals such as payroll, payables, and grant funding, plus the purchase of three Dodge Durangos from the Kansas Highway Patrol for $116,700. Payroll approvals totaled $2,286,108.85 for the county and $329,124.64 for the jail district. The agenda also included Community Partners Funding Program disbursements.
Victim Compensation Board
The Victim Compensation Board met Aug. 20 at 9:30 a.m. in the County Attorney's Office. The agenda included approval of minutes from June 18, 2026, a financial update, and discussion of a victim compensation retreat. The financial update noted that FY27 grant agreements have not yet been received, leaving the board's financial outlook uncertain. The next meeting is scheduled for September 25, 2026.
