Hialeah Council approves $1.085M for water plant work, $563K for park cameras

The Hialeah City Council on Aug. 11 approved a $1,085,000 increase in purchase orders for reverse osmosis plant work, the largest of several spending items on its consent agenda. The council also approved $562,979.62 for CCTV camera systems at six city parks, along with contracts for playground surfacing, home repairs, and roadway design. All votes were 5-0-2.

Council actions

The reverse osmosis plant purchase orders, approved without discussion, add to existing funding for the water treatment facility. The CCTV camera purchase covers security systems for six park facilities. Both items were pulled from the consent agenda for separate discussion, along with a smart water meter pilot program from IUSA Water that carries no cost to the city; that program also passed 5-0-2.

Other approved items, all by the same vote tally, include:

• $92,718.34 for a SHIP home repair contract for Julio Cabrera

Other recent meetings

On Aug. 12, the city's Special Master held an administrative hearing on 128 code enforcement cases, including 101 referred cases and 27 mitigation or lien cases. The docket included violations for building without permits, unsafe structures, and overgrown lots at addresses such as 2460 W 2 Ave, 305 W 21 St, 255 W 24 St, and 2001 W 68 St. The Special Master can impose fines up to $250 per day for first violations and place liens on properties if fines go unpaid. On Aug. 14, the council held a workshop on boat legislation. The agenda listed presentations, discussion, and public comments, but no specific items or decisions were made.

Coming up

The Beautification Committee will meet Aug. 20 to approve minutes from its June 25 meeting and discuss a proposed Citywide Holiday Lights Contest and a discussion about polo shirts. No major decisions are listed.

The Special Master will hold another code enforcement hearing Aug. 26, with 95 cases on the docket.
