Franklin Park boards to weigh waste contract, variances, land use

The Franklin Park Borough Council's Aug. 19 agenda included a four-year solid waste collection contract with Waste Management of Pennsylvania Inc., along with a subdivision, a land development, and a sewage facilities planning module. The council also considered a $19,666.67 partial payment to the McCandless-Franklin Park Ambulance Authority. Borough Council (Aug. 19)

The regular council meeting agenda included:

• Awarding Waste Management of Pennsylvania Inc. a contract for solid waste, recyclables, and household hazardous waste collection from Jan. 1, 2027, to Dec. 31, 2030, with a possible one-year extension.
• Approving a minor subdivision (SS-26-08-07) for a lot line revision at 1000 and 1100 Pine Lane.
• Approving land development (LPF-26-07-01) for the Franklin Inn at 2313 Rochester Road.

Planning Commission (Aug. 18)

The Planning Commission considered two applications:

• A conditional use request (CU 26-08-02) by Gene and Whitney Natali for a detached garage exceeding 1,000 square feet at 2286 Sylvan Drive (R-2 district).
• A logging application by DeNoon Lumber Company, LLC for 2633 Weinman Road and Parcel 1343-M-287 (R-1 district).

The commission also planned to approve the July 21, 2026 meeting minutes. Items could be tabled at the commission's discretion.

Zoning Hearing Board (Aug. 13)

The Zoning Hearing Board heard five variance appeals, all in the R-2 Zoning District:

• Chris & Holly Persic: variance for an accessory-use shed without a principal use at King David Drive (parcel 609-H-150).
• David Miller: front-yard setback encroachment at 2355 James Drive.
• Alan & Margaret Wilson: front-yard setback encroachment at 2562 Meinert Road.
• Dr. Cheryl Rosato: front-yard setback encroachment at 2614 Glenchester Road.
• Greg & Ashley Simpson: rear-yard setback encroachment for a detached garage at 1582 Bellmonte Road.

No old business was on the agenda.

Environmental Advisory Council (Aug. 17)

The Environmental Advisory Council discussed updates on old business, including a Bird Town PA grant, a possible publication on lithium batteries, and the tree ordinance. New business included a state grant possibility, bird outreach, and recycling outreach. The council also considered ongoing requests from the borough council regarding landscape ordinances, sidewalk connectivity, and tree sound barriers.

Franklin Park roundup: No decisions in past two weeks; council to weigh waste contract

Franklin Park Borough Council held no voting meetings in the past two weeks. The most consequential item on the horizon is a vote scheduled for Aug. 19 to award a four-year waste collection contract to Waste Management of Pennsylvania Inc.

Recent meetings

Borough Council work session (Aug. 5) — This was a discussion session, not a voting meeting, and no public comments were taken. Council heard a presentation on the 2025 audit report from Maher Duessel, reviewed the Franklin Inn application, and discussed deer management and a Dirt, Gravel & Low Volume Road Grant. The Land Use/Planning Committee also discussed a Wireless Master Plan and zoning amendments for cellular infrastructure. Minutes have not yet been published.
