Flagler County Commission interviews six candidates for administrator

The Flagler County Board of County Commissioners and the Planning and Development Board met over the past two weeks, but no formal decisions were made. The most significant item was the commission's search for a new county administrator, with six candidates interviewed.

County administrator search

On Aug. 10, the commission held a workshop to interview six candidates for county administrator: Richard Reade, Tracy Miller, Thomas Hutka, Shawn Boatright, Stanley Hawthorne, and Aaron Van Kleeck. The agenda included a report from the FACM Review Committee and panel interviews with each candidate. Public comment was limited to three minutes per speaker, with a total of 30 minutes. No formal decisions were expected.

Also on Aug. 10, the commission held a special meeting to discuss and take action on short-listing county administrator applicants for onsite interviews. That was the only substantive item on the agenda.

Planning and Development Board

On Aug. 11, the Planning and Development Board met and the agenda included public hearings on two variance requests. One was a continued request for a pump house at 3 Pelican Lane, seeking a reduced street side setback of 22.34 feet (from the required 25 feet) and a 1.2% increase in lot coverage (from the 35% maximum). The request had been continued from April 14, 2026. The other was a new request at 2 Valencia Street for a 7.5-foot reduction in the front (east) yard setback from the required 25 feet. The board could approve, deny, or continue each request. Public comment was limited to three minutes per speaker and five minutes for groups. The agenda also included approval of the July 14, 2026 minutes.

Commission public hearings and consent items

On Aug. 17, the commission met and the agenda included public hearings on two special use requests for telecommunications towers: one at 2730 Airport Road (10.44 acres) and one at 2512 Orange Street (20 acres). The board also considered an amendment to the Radiance PUD development agreement covering 608 acres.

The consent agenda included a residential solid waste increase: a $100,000 purchase order increase and a contract cap increase from $3.9 million to $4.5 million annually. Also on the consent agenda were two FAA grants: $591,040 for taxilane rehabilitation and $500,000 for air traffic control tower renovations at Flagler Executive Airport.

Workshop on library, Nexus, and budget

Also on Aug. 17, the commission held a workshop to discuss the Library Board of Trustees annual report, the Community Room at Nexus, and the FY 2026-27 budget. The workshop was discussion-only, with no formal decisions expected.

Flagler County board weighs $34M beach project, administrator search; decisions pending

Flagler County's Board of County Commissioners met twice last week to consider a $34 million beach nourishment contract and to interview candidates for county administrator, but official minutes have not yet been published, so no decisions are confirmed. The board also has a workshop and a regular meeting scheduled for Aug. 17.

Aug. 3 meeting

The board's agenda included a bid award to Weeks Marine, Inc. for the Reach II Beach Nourishment Project, not to exceed $34,000,000.00. Also on the agenda was a contract with C.W. Roberts Contracting, Inc. for County Road 205 widening and resurfacing at $2,455,122.00. The board was set to recognize $10,000,000 in unanticipated revenue for acquisition of conservation lands and to accept a grant of $828,884.00 from the Florida Commission for the Transportation Disadvantaged. A public hearing was scheduled for a sterilization requirement waiver for Samadhi Wildlife, Inc. on Carter Trail.
