Eveleth Council workshop, EDA dissolution on this week's agenda

The Eveleth City Council held a workshop on Aug. 17 to discuss water main replacements, street mill and overlay work, a potential condemnation, and county tax-forfeited property sales. No formal votes were taken. Separately, the Virginia/Eveleth Economic Development Authority (VEEDA) is scheduled to meet Aug. 20 to consider dissolving the authority. That meeting has not yet occurred.

City Council workshop (Aug. 17)

The council reviewed an engineer's preliminary cost estimate for downtown street mill and overlay on Van Buren Avenue and other streets. It also discussed replacing a 16-inch watermain between Fayal Avenue and Elba Avenue, a Fayal Avenue water extension loop, and a cemetery water utility extension.

Council members considered a request for condemnation financial assistance to St. Louis County for 717 Summit Street. They also reviewed county tax-forfeited properties scheduled for public auction, with listed minimum bids of $15,600 for 418 Jones Street, $56,100 for 1116 West 2nd Street, and $26,800 for 207 Grant Avenue.

Other agenda items included a veterans park manager contract extension, a mine tour project sign, open positions and a wage study, and development projects involving the school redevelopment, 1402 Building, Community Center, Progress Parkway, Alice Location, and Jack Pine.

Virginia/Eveleth EDA meeting (Aug. 20)

The VEDA will hold its regular meeting at Virginia City Hall. The main item is a proposal to dissolve and wind up the affairs of the Virginia Economic Development Authority under Article X of the Amended Joint Powers Agreement. The board will also approve July minutes, bills payable, and financial statements for the general, 1402, and 1404 buildings, and receive updates on the audit and the joint powers agreement.
