Planning Commission

The Planning Commission held two public hearings Aug. 19. The first was a conditional use permit (PL26-0041) for 611 Norvell St. to allow expansion of a non-conforming setback for a single-family dwelling. The second was a Tier IV design review (PL26-0024) for a new three-story development at 6501 Fairmount Ave. and 412 Lexington Ave., with 16 townhomes and 757 sq ft of ground-floor commercial space. Other recent meetings

The Urban Forest Committee met Aug. 10 to hear updates on the Hillside Natural Area wildfire resilience and forest conservation plan, a presentation from Friends of the Hillside on invasive species and fire fuel reduction work, and to discuss collaborations with the Environmental Quality Committee and Park and Recreation Commission. The committee also began planning for Arbor Week 2027.

The Environmental Quality Committee met Aug. 11 with a 45-minute presentation from Friends of the Hillside Natural Area, discussion of collaboration with the Urban Forest Committee, and updates on the Green Team 2026 cleanups: Coastal Cleanup Day Sept. 19 at Creekside Park, Northern Gateways Oct. 11 at Del Norte Plaza, and Baxter Creek Dec. 6. The committee also discussed its FY 26-27 work plan and cancelled its Sept. 8 meeting.

The Economic Development Committee meeting scheduled for Aug. 17 was cancelled.

No decisions have been published from El Cerrito's recent advisory board meetings, as minutes have not yet been released. The Design Review Board's August 5 meeting was cancelled. This week, two committees meet on wildfire resilience and environmental cleanup efforts.

Urban Forest Committee (August 10, today)

The committee will hear an update on implementation of the Hillside Natural Area Wildfire Resilience and Forest Conservation Management Plan. The committee will also discuss collaboration with the Environmental Quality Committee and Park and Recreation Commission, and begin preliminary planning for Arbor Week 2027. Environmental Quality Committee (August 11)

The committee will hear a 45-minute presentation from Friends of the Hillside Natural Area. El Cerrito Council Considers District Map, Fire Vehicle and Software Contracts

The El Cerrito City Council was scheduled July 21 to adopt a district-based election ordinance with a final boundary map and approve two procurement contracts totaling more than $300,000. Minutes from that meeting and three other recent city meetings have not yet been published, so outcomes listed below reflect what was on each agenda, not confirmed results.

City Council — July 21

The council agenda called for adopting an ordinance establishing five council districts and a final boundary map, which was introduced at the July 7, 2026, meeting. If adopted, the ordinance would shift El Cerrito from at-large to district-based City Council elections.

The agenda also included two procurement resolutions:

• Purchase of one Chevrolet Tahoe SSV command vehicle for the Fire Department, not to exceed $100,000.
• An agreement with Ally Technologies for Microsoft M365 Government G3 and Business Premium licenses, not to exceed $208,650 over three years.
