Coweta commissioners to set millage rates, decide FY2027 budget on Aug. 25

Recent meetings of Coweta County boards produced no published decisions; minutes are still pending. The most consequential action this week is scheduled for Aug. 25, when the Board of Commissioners is set to set the 2026 millage rates and decide the proposed Fiscal Year 2027 budget.

Board of Commissioners (Aug. 11)

The board held public hearings on the proposed FY2027 budget and the 2026 millage rates. It also considered a special use permit for a cell tower at 2257 Old Corinth Road, Newnan, a contract extension with AmWaste for solid waste hauling and disposal, and a resolution to establish compensation for tax appeal hearing officers in 2027. Board of Tax Assessors (Aug. 19)

The board discussed updates on 2024 and 2026 appeals and considered approving 2026 Conservation Use Valuation (CUVA) applications. It also reviewed refund requests for properties at 2400 South Ridge, Senoia and 362 Millard Farmer Road, Newnan (tax years 2023–2025), and acted on denials of homestead exemptions and late appeals. Board of Zoning Appeals (Aug. 20)

The board held a public hearing on a variance request from Gary Adams for a distance between buildings at 253 Timber Creek Estates Drive, Sharpsburg (District 4). It also approved minutes from its July 23 hearing. Minutes have not yet been published.

Board of Commissioners (Aug. 25) – millage and budget

This meeting includes a third public hearing on the proposed 2026 millage rates and a vote to set them. The board will also decide the proposed FY2027 budget, consider rezoning petition REZ 26-10 by BAF Enterprises at 6599 Hwy 16 East, Senoia, and a buffer variance VAR 26-15 for the same property. The agenda includes a lease agreement with the State Properties Commission for Department of Juvenile Justice space.

Board of Commissioners (Aug. 25) – second public hearing

The board will hold a second public hearing on the proposed 2026 millage rates. The agenda also includes public comments on non-agenda items (up to 10 speakers, 3 minutes each) and an executive session per O.C.G.A. § 50-14-2.

Coweta tax board denies late appeal, approves conservation use applications

The Coweta County Board of Tax Assessors on Aug. 5 denied a request to accept a late property tax appeal, citing lack of authority under Georgia law, and approved three conservation use valuation (CUVA) applications. The board also denied tax-exempt status for a ministry, approved a refund for incorrect square footage, and acted on several other property tax matters.

The board unanimously denied a request from Jim Hawthorne to accept a late appeal, stating it had no authority under Georgia law to do so. It approved three parcels for 2026 Conservation Use Valuation (CUVA) applications, which can lower property taxes for qualifying agricultural or forestry use. The board also approved the discontinuation of CUVA on parcel #163-1246-006 with a penalty, and removed non-disclosure status on parcel #082-5215-019.

Tax-exempt status was denied for Timothy A Williams Ministries Inc. on parcel #110-5049-002. The board also denied a Veteran's Homestead Exemption for Dennis Lee Aldridge for tax year 2026. A refund was approved for a property with incorrect square footage, though the amount was not specified in the minutes. The board approved its agenda and the minutes from its July 15 meeting.

Other recent meetings

The Board of Trustees for the Salary Deferral Plan and Employee Matching Plan met Aug. 5 to approve minutes from May 13 and receive quarterly investment and management reports from OneDigital and Empower. Coweta County commissioners set FY2027 budget hearing for July 21; rezoning and license applications on recent agendas

Coweta County's Board of Commissioners has scheduled a public hearing on the proposed Fiscal Year 2027 budget for July 21, 2026, following a July 14 work session where the budget, the 2026 millage rate, a Data Center Ordinance, and the Georgia Cottage Food Law were discussed. Minutes from the recent meetings have not yet been published, so only agenda items can be confirmed.

Board of Commissioners — July 7

The July 7 agenda included a continuation of the public hearing on rezoning petition REZ 25-08 for property at 441 Poplar Road, Newnan. The board was also scheduled to consider new consumption and package beer/wine license applications for Osaka Express and Hot Spot.

Airport Authority — July 17

The Newnan-Coweta County Airport Authority met for a regular session.
