Clay County boards weigh budget moves, equipment buys; zoning board to hear variances

County Commission business sessions

The County Commission met twice. The regular agenda included purchasing 20 Daniel Defense patrol rifles from Clyde Armory Inc. for the Sheriff, and a TruNarc Delta handheld narcotics testing instrument from Thermo Scientific. Park and tourism boards

The Park Board met Aug. 11 to hear an update on the Master and Strategic Plan from CHM Government Services, along with the Parks Director's report and public comments. The board also approved minutes from its July 14 meeting.

The Tourism Board met Aug. 18 to discuss advertising, future planning for Go North KC, 2027 summer events, website updates, and new marketing messaging. The board also received reports on social media, website analytics, and the Tap Into Local digital discount pass.

Property assessment appeals

The Board of Equalization held public hearings on Aug. 3, 5, 10, 11, and 12 to review property assessment appeals. All hearings were held at the Commission Hearing Room, 1 Courthouse Square, Liberty.

Coming up

The Board of Zoning Adjustment will meet Aug. 25 to consider two variance requests. One (PZ26-120) seeks to allow lots with a minimum width of less than 300 feet, deviating from the county's density standards. The other (PZ26-122), from Steven and Jordan Sutlick, requests permission to operate a tutoring and speech therapy service on residential rural (R-1) zoned land. The board will also approve minutes from its March 24 meeting and swear in individuals wishing to testify.

Clay County boards to weigh road work, rezoning, property appeals

Clay County officials have a full slate of agenda items this month, including proposed road improvements, a pavement management contract, and several rezoning requests. No decisions have been published yet for recent meetings, as minutes are still pending. The Board of Equalization continues its property assessment appeal hearings through mid-August.

County Commission

At its July 30 meeting, the Board of County Commission considered proposed infrastructure improvements on 144th Street for the Whispering Creek Farms LLC development. The agenda also included Ordinance 2026-ORD-12, which would authorize the sheriff to administer the Law Enforcement Resource Center to outside agencies, along with a fee schedule for that center. Planning & Zoning Commission

The Planning & Zoning Commission met August 4 to review four rezoning and land use requests. Cases include:

• PZ26-115: Rezoning to Residential Ranchette (R-5) and plat approval for Thoman Addition 3rd Plat at 18205 State Route 33.
• PZ26-116: Rezoning to R-5 and preliminary plat approval for Petty Farm at 12518 NE Mount Olivet Rd.
• PZ26-117: Rezoning to Residential Rural (R-1) and plat approval for Clear Creek Reserve at 14621 NE 188th St.
• PZ26-123: Request for residential well water use at 19810 N 69 Highway.

Decisions on two cases may be final, while the other two will be forwarded to the County Commission.

Board of Equalization
