Ottawa City Council approves school resource officer MOU and Thornton House sale

Fire and police boards

The Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, meeting Aug. 12, will consider reopening the police officer lateral transfer eligibility list for 60 days and possibly starting new testing if the current list is exhausted. The board will also receive updates on hiring for two fire and two police candidates, and review personnel letters and a psychological evaluation report for firefighter candidate Ashton Billings. An executive session is scheduled for personnel matters.

The Firefighters Pension Board, meeting Aug. 20, will review financial reports, approve invoices, and consider retirement benefits for Brian Dose. It will also accept new hires Billings and Sondergroth and discuss disability annual physicals.

Parks and preservation

The Playground and Recreation Board, meeting Aug. 13, will discuss the Skate Park OSLAD Grant, repairs to the Peck Park basketball courts, and bathroom facilities at North Side Diamonds.

The Historic Preservation Commission, meeting Aug. 13, will hold a public hearing on a Certificate of Appropriateness for storefront renovations and new second-story windows at 208 West Main St., owned by Thomas P. and Meg E. Arneson. The commission will also discuss Charles Lindbergh signage at City Hall and approve minutes from a June 24 special meeting.

Electrical Commission

The Electrical Commission, meeting Aug. 18, will review the Electrical Inspector's report, which covers license renewals, new licenses, exam results, and inspection totals. The report shows 573 active electrical licenses in 2026 to date, with 13 licenses renewed in April, 5 in May, and 8 in June. New licenses issued: 4 in January, 8 in February, and 2 in March. Exam results: 9 on April 4 (5 pass, 4 fail), 5 on May 22 (3 pass, 2 fail), 6 on June 26 (4 pass, 2 fail), and 13 on July 29 (7 pass, 5 fail, 1 no-show). Monthly inspections: 12 in April, 30 in May, 21 in June, and 32 in July.

Ottawa committee approves $3,000 in event funding; council to weigh data center moratorium

The Ottawa Special Events Committee approved $3,000 in funding for three events at its Aug. 6 meeting, the only formal decision recorded among recent city meetings. The City Council is set to consider a data center moratorium and a TIF agreement at its Aug. 18 regular meeting.

Special Events Committee

At its Aug. 6 meeting, the committee approved $1,000 for the Flotsam River Circus, $500 for Community Trunk or Treat, and $1,500 for a Gospel Concert. The $1,500 motion passed with Lloyd Chapman abstaining. A $600 request for a Glow Pool Party was withdrawn. The committee also approved minutes from its July 2 meeting and the financial report.

Other recent meetings

Plan Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals

Both bodies held public hearings July 27.
