Cayuga County Roundup: Legislature weighs administrator search, water authority eyes sewer plan

County government bodies took up a busy slate of business in the past two weeks, with agendas ranging from a new county administrator search to lake protection infrastructure. No formal decisions were reported by press time, as minutes for all recent meetings remain unpublished.

County Legislature

The Cayuga County Legislature met June 23 with a docket that included a professional services agreement with Pracademic Partners for executive recruitment of a County Administrator, the purchase of new boilers for the County Court House and Historic Post Office, and acceptance of a $19,000 STRIVE grant for the Sheriff’s Office. Members also considered a three-year snow and ice removal agreement with towns and villages, and a proposed local law to extend the ability to hold public meetings via videoconferencing through July 15, 2028.

Water and Sewer

The Cayuga County Water and Sewer Authority Board convened July 1 with a focus on infrastructure and environmental protection. Items included an insurance renewal review, an update on the North Street Waterline project, a discussion of a Cayuga Lake Protection Plan sanitary sewer along Honoco Road, and possible letters of support for Water Infrastructure Improvement Act grants for the Towns of Throop and Locke. The board also received an update on City of Auburn water contract negotiations.

Health, Insurance and Community Services

The Board of Health met June 23 to review fiscal claims and fee scales, and heard reports on immunization and communicable disease statistics, tick-borne illness activity, and programs for children with special healthcare needs.

The Health Insurance Consortium Board of Directors met June 25. In addition to approving a consent agenda, members received a presentation from USI on utilization review, 2027 renewal projections, and a wellness program overview.

The Community Services Board, also on June 25, held a largely procedural meeting with subcommittee reports, a director’s update and a financial review. The Alcohol and Substance Use Sub-Committee met July 1 without substantive action items listed on its agenda.

The Water Quality Management Agency held a board work session July 2 to refine public-facing messaging about its mission and programs. The meeting also included reports from county environmental, parks, planning and soil and water conservation departments, as well as lake association and partner updates.

Coming up

The Health and Human Services Committee meets July 8 to vote on resolutions authorizing the filling of a full-time Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner at the Community Mental Health Center, either a Senior Public Health Educator, Community Outreach Coordinator or Public Health Educator in the Health Department, and three positions in Mental Health. It will also consider two seasonal clerks and a Human Services Examiner for Social Services, and acceptance of additional Meals on Wheels funding. An update on the rural health residency program, hydrilla treatment on Cayuga Lake, harmful algal blooms and the Senior Farmer’s Market distribution is scheduled.
