Recent meetings

Planning Board (Aug. 6)

The Planning Board held three public hearings on proposed zoning bylaw amendments: creating a "Temporary Special Signs" section, redefining "Structure," and adding a footnote on minimum front yard setback requirements. Conservation Commission (Aug. 13)

The Conservation Commission considered an emergency certification for a National Grid gas main replacement at Maud Graham Circle, certificates of compliance for 1 Elizabeth Avenue and 7 Abbott Park, and requests for determination of applicability for 4 Lucy Road and 12 Chadwick Road. Several hearings were continued: 8 Nelson Road, 129-131 Middlesex Turnpike, 85 Wilmington Road, 2 Wall Street, and 7 A Street. Burlington committee approves recall threshold change, rejects term limits

The Burlington Government Review Committee on July 28 approved several charter language updates, including a change to the recall election threshold and nonpartisan ballot language, while declining to recommend term limits. The committee voted 8-2 to make a recall election valid if 20% of eligible voters participate, replacing the previous 30% threshold, which failed to retain on a 3-7 vote. It also approved election supervision language (10-0), nonpartisan ballot language (10-0), and language for ballot name placement (10-0). A motion to set April as the election month failed on a 5-5 tie. The committee voted 1-9 against recommending term limits, but 9-1 to recommend further research by a future committee.

Government Review Committee decisions

At its July 28 meeting, the committee took the following actions:

Select Board takes up ICE facility, liquor licenses

The Select Board convened June 22 and discussed a proposed Immigration and Customs Enforcement processing facility. The agenda item was for discussion only; no vote was scheduled. The board also held public hearings for a beer and wine license at Sunflower Organic Pizza, 1 Wheeler Road, and a grant of location on Stony Brook Road. In other business, members approved a road closure on Fox Hill Road and extended AMC Theater hours to 2 a.m. for the periods July 17-26 and July 31-Aug. 9.

Board of Health considers Chick-fil-A, well permits

On June 23, the Board of Health reviewed a site plan and special permit application for a Chick-fil-A at 2 Wall Street. The board also considered well permits for a 70-unit closed-loop geothermal system at Fox Hill Elementary School, 252 Fox Hill Road, and a biological safety permit for MBX Biosciences at 5 Burlington Woods Drive. A Kratom Regulations Subcommittee report and an update from a Tri-Ton Coalition health inspector were on the agenda. A separate subcommittee meeting June 25 focused exclusively on kratom regulations and included a public hearing.

School Committee votes on coach stipends, weighs restraint policy

The School Committee on June 23 was scheduled to vote on stipends for 2026-2027 academic curriculum coaches in literacy and math. Voting outcomes were not immediately available. Members held a first reading of a restraint and seclusion policy and a second reading of updated physical education standards. Updates were also provided on the Fox Hill and Burlington High School building projects, field maintenance, and transportation.

Charter review panel advances finance article

The Government Review Committee on June 23 discussed and reviewed Article 5 on finance with assistance from the Collins Center. Members introduced Article 6 on administrative organization and previewed the final charter sections: elections, recall, general provisions, and transition. The committee received an update on a town survey and is preparing for a public charter review session July 28.

Conservation Commission continues wetlands hearings

The Conservation Commission on June 25 held continued public hearings on notices of intent for a new commercial building at 85 Wilmington Road, a multi-family residential building at 129-131 Middlesex Turnpike, and the demolition and rebuilding of a commercial building at 2 Wall Street. A certificate of compliance for 7 Abbott Park and requests for determination for a pool at 5 Marion Road and a patio at 12 Sarah Street were also on the agenda.
