Brunswick County boards weigh warehouse, rezoning, and dog daycare requests

Over the past two weeks, five Brunswick County boards met to consider land-use requests, park updates, and administrative matters. The most consequential items on the docket were a proposed industrial warehouse in Leland and several residential rezoning cases before the Planning Board, plus public hearings on rezoning appeals and a dog daycare before the Board of Commissioners.

Planning Board (Aug. 10)

The Planning Board reviewed a major site plan for a Victaulic Company industrial warehouse at 2010 Enterprise Drive NE in Leland. It also took up two rezoning cases: Z-940, which would change 67.52 acres off Maco Rd. NE from RR to R-7500, and Z-941 with a land-use amendment (LUM-941) for 13.11 acres at 95 Ocean Isle Beach Rd. SW. Two planned developments were on the agenda: Amber Glen (PD-180), proposing 417 single-family homes on 122 acres near Bolivia, and a modification to Berkley Bay (PD-183), proposing 289 single-family homes on 107.93 acres near Bolivia.

Parks & Recreation Advisory Board

The board met on Aug. 11 to nominate and vote on officers. The Director’s Report covered updates on ARPA-funded projects, Leland Park, Ocean Isle Beach Park, a resurfacing project, and programs for youth, adults, seniors, and special populations. The board’s next meeting, scheduled for Sept. 8, has been cancelled.

Board of Adjustment

On Aug. 13, the board heard a special use permit for a Class I mining operation at 1607 Longwood Rd NW in Ash (Case 26-11S) and two appeals of administrative decisions: one for 2420 William Street SW in Supply (Case 26-04A) and one for 1779 Leland School Road NE, Lot 3, in Leland (Case 26-12A). The board also approved minutes from its March 12, April 9, and May 14 meetings.

Board of Commissioners

The county’s governing board held public hearings on Aug. 17 for three planning cases: a rezoning appeal (Z-936) for Tax Parcel 18500018 from RR to NC, a rezoning appeal (Z-938) for Tax Parcel 2273A155 from SB-MR-3 to C-LD, and a special use permit (26-12S) for Salty Paws Dog Daycare at 2567 Holden Beach Road SW in Supply. The consent agenda included a $150,000 donation from the Friends of the Library for the Barbee Branch Library expansion and an EMS contract with the NC Department of Health and Human Services for a Mobile Integrated Health and Community Paramedic Grant.

Board of Elections

The Board of Elections met on Aug. 18 to handle routine matters, including appointing Karen Litchfield to the Multipartisan Assistance Team and approving minutes from its July 14 regular meeting.

Brunswick commissioners to weigh fire fee changes, $8.1M in utility contracts

The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing on fire fee funding changes tied to the state's 2026-27 budget and consider several utility contracts totaling more than $8.1 million at its Aug. 3 meeting, according to the agenda. No minutes have been published yet, so no decisions have been confirmed.

Board of Commissioners (Aug. 3)

The board will take public comment on proposed fire fee funding changes resulting from the NC General Assembly's FY 27 budget. The agenda also includes:

• A contract with Greer Lime Company for $2,936,006.09 for water treatment lime.
• A contract amendment for the NE Brunswick WWTP Phase III Expansion valued at $4,126,115.

Brunswick County boards weigh $62.6M building project, 291-home development, and 2026 early voting plan

Brunswick County's Board of Commissioners had the largest dollar item of the past two weeks on its July 6 agenda: a $62,603,663 guaranteed maximum price for Phase 2 services on the HHS/EOC Building. Minutes for that meeting and three others have not yet been published, so the outcomes listed below reflect what each board was scheduled to consider, not confirmed decisions.

Board of Commissioners — July 6

The commissioners' agenda included several contracts and funding items:

• **HHS/EOC Building Phase 2 Services GMP** — $62,603,663.
• **Mulberry WWRF Change Order #4** — $136,366.69.
• **Library LSTA Grant Acceptance** — $29,100.
• **Water Shortage Response Plan** — a resolution to adopt an updated plan.
