School Board to review 2027-28 course offerings; October agendas show no recorded votes yet

Agendas were published for eight Alexandria City Public Schools meetings between Oct. 15 and Oct. 22, covering new high school course proposals, board salaries, election reform and funding roles. Minutes for all eight have not yet been published, so the records available do not establish any votes, dollar amounts or final outcomes. The widest-ranging item on any agenda was the School Board's Oct. 22 review of the proposed 2027-28 Secondary Schools Program of Studies.

School Board: new courses, math update, policy revisions

The School Board met Oct. 22 at 6:00 p.m. Its agenda listed a proposed 2027-28 Program of Studies that includes AI Literacy I, II, and dual enrollment courses. Also on the agenda: an implementation update on enVision Mathematics (K–Algebra II) and Project-Based Learning; proposed policy revisions for Student Transportation Services and extracurricular hate speech/conduct; proposed revisions to Advanced Academic Services Advisory Committee (AASAC) bylaws; and recognition of Ryan Belmore of the Alexandria Brief for the VSBA Media Honor Roll. The agenda does not record what the board did with any of these items.

Board salaries resolution appears on two agendas

A Board Salaries Resolution drafted by the Operational Excellence Committee was listed for review at two meetings. The Strategy & Accountability Committee on Oct. 15 at 5:00 p.m. was set to review the resolution along with a strategic plan update provided by Dr. Page, an accountability update, and approval of Sept. 14 meeting minutes. The Governance Committee on Oct. 16 at 7:30 a.m. was also set to review the resolution, alongside proposed revisions to policies FEA, FEG, FEGA and FEGA-R on facilities and capital improvement, a correction to an error on form FFA-R Appendix A, and a discussion of School Board election reform.

Election reform committee working toward Nov. 10 report

The City/ACPS Ad Hoc Committee on School Board Election Reform met Oct. 20 at 6:00 p.m. Its agenda listed discussion of potential election scenarios aligned with midterm, presidential and gubernatorial cycles, review of options for school board elections with Council at 3 year terms, and determination of committee recommendations for a Nov. 10 report.

Funding roles and 2026-27 action steps

A Board Facilitation session on Oct. 15 at 6:00 p.m. was scheduled to discuss the School Board's role in the funding process, ACPS resource needs and expectations, and determination of action steps for 2026-27.

Alexandria schools: FY 2028 budget priorities, calendar change and board salaries on October agendas

Alexandria City Public Schools bodies met six times between Oct. 5 and Oct. 16. Agendas included a School Board consent vote on FY 2028 budget priorities and a 10-year capital improvement plan, a change to the academic calendar, and a resolution on board salaries. Minutes have not yet been published for any of the six meetings, so the public record does not yet show what was approved, rejected or changed.

FY 2028 budget and capital priorities

The School Board met Oct. 8 at 6:00 p.m. at 1340 Braddock Place. Its consent calendar listed approval of the FY 2028 Combined Funds and FY 2028-2037 Capital Improvement Program budget priorities. The same consent calendar listed personnel actions for Sept. 21 through Oct. 2, 2026, described as confidential, and approval of meeting minutes. The agenda also listed public comments, reports and possible closed meetings.

Calendar change

Also on the Oct. 8 consent calendar: a change moving the division-wide professional learning day from Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026 to Monday, Nov. 2, 2026, with an exception for Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School.

Walk zone appeals

A monitoring item at the Oct. 8 meeting covered walk zone appeals: 395 appeals from 16 schools reviewed, and 456 students newly eligible for bus transportation, with new routes starting Oct. 5, 2026. Proposed policy revisions listed for the meeting included Student Transportation Services (EEA), high school athletic eligibility (IGDAA-R), and extracurricular conduct policies (JFCB, JFCB-R, JFCB-R2).

Board salaries

The Operational Excellence Committee met virtually via Zoom on Oct. 6 at 6:00 p.m. Its agenda listed a discussion of board salaries, noting that ACPS policy requires the Board to review its salaries the year before an election year. The only listed action item was approval of minutes from the Aug. 31 meeting. Other listed topics were a wrap-up of Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt's evaluation, advisory committee appointments and a progress update, a naming petitions update, a Board website update, and planning for FY27.

A Board Salaries Resolution drafted by the Operational Excellence Committee was then listed for review at two more meetings: the Strategy & Accountability Committee on Oct. 15 at 5:00 p.m., and the Governance Committee on Oct. 16 at 7:30 a.m.

Facilities policies and election reform

The Governance Committee's Oct. 16 agenda also listed proposed revisions to policies FEA, FEG, FEGA and FEGA-R on facilities and capital improvement, a correction to an error on form FFA-R, Appendix A, and a discussion on School Board election reform.

Other business

The Strategy & Accountability Committee (Oct. 15, 5:00 p.m.) listed a strategic plan update provided by Dr. Page, an accountability update, and approval of Sept. 14 meeting minutes. A Board Facilitation session the same day at 6:00 p.m. listed discussion of the School Board's role in the funding process, ACPS resource needs and expectations, and determination of action steps for 2026-27. Alexandria School Board agenda listed FY 2028 budget priorities vote; minutes not yet published

Minutes have not yet been published for any of the five Alexandria City Public Schools meetings held in the past two weeks, so the record available for those dates shows what was scheduled, not what was decided. The most consequential item on that record is the October 8 School Board agenda, which listed a consent vote on the division's FY 2028 Combined Funds and FY 2028-2037 Capital Improvement Program budget priorities.

Budget priorities set for an October 8 vote

The School Board met Thursday, October 8, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. at 1340 Braddock Place. Its consent calendar listed approval of the FY 2028 Combined Funds and FY 2028-2037 Capital Improvement Program budget priorities, a revision to the 2026-27 academic calendar, personnel actions for September 21 through October 2, 2026 (listed as confidential), and meeting minutes. The supplied agenda does not include dollar amounts for the budget priorities.

At an October 1 work session, the Board was scheduled to review staff-recommended FY 2028 Combined Funds and FY 2028-2037 CIP budget priorities, which were set to be finalized at the October 8 budget meeting, and to hear a FY 2027-2032 five-year fiscal forecast presented by staff.

Walk zone appeals

Also listed as a monitoring item on the October 8 agenda: an update on 2026-27 walk zone appeals. According to the agenda, 395 appeals from 16 schools were reviewed and 456 students became newly eligible for bus transportation, with new routes starting October 5, 2026.

Calendar change

The consent calendar listed moving the division-wide professional learning day from Tuesday, November 3, 2026 to Monday, November 2, 2026, with an exception for Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School.

Strategic plan results

At the October 1 work session, members were scheduled to review Year 1 performance against the ACPS 2030 strategic plan's Key Performance Indicators. The agenda reported that ACPS met or approached targets on 11 of 16 KPIs: met 9, approached 2, no change 3, decline 2.

Board salaries, evaluation and policies

Board salaries were listed for discussion at both the October 1 work session and the October 6 Operational Excellence Committee meeting; ACPS policy requires the Board to review its salaries the year before an election year. The October 6 committee agenda also listed a wrap-up of Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt's evaluation, advisory committee appointments, a naming petitions update and a board website update. Approval of minutes from the August 31 meeting was the only listed action item.

The October 8 agenda listed proposed revisions to policies including Student Transportation Services (EEA), high school athletic eligibility (IGDAA-R), and extracurricular conduct policies (JFCB, JFCB-R, JFCB-R2). Possible closed meetings were listed for both October 1 and October 8, with certification under Virginia Code 2.2-3712.

Other committee meetings

The Budget Advisory Committee met by Zoom at 7:00 p.m. on September 29; its posted agenda contained only two procedural items, the agenda itself and minutes from the August 25, 2026 meeting. The Athletic Hall of Fame Advisory Committee met October 5 at the Alexandria City High School gym lobby, with an agenda consisting of procedural items including review and approval of September 14, 2026 minutes.
