Anacortes Council approves internet contract, water plant analysis

The Anacortes City Council on Aug. 10 approved a $151,200 contract with Ziply Fiber for dedicated internet access, adopted the 2026 Skagit County Hazard Mitigation Plan, and authorized a $158,700 alternatives analysis for the water treatment plant intake pump station. All votes were unanimous.

Council actions

The council approved the Ziply Fiber contract for dedicated internet access, a service that supports city operations. It also adopted Resolution 3196, which brings the city into the county's hazard mitigation plan, a document that guides disaster preparedness and recovery.

In a separate action, the council authorized a $158,700 contract with HDR Engineering to analyze alternatives for the water treatment plant intake pump station. The analysis will help determine future upgrades or replacements.

The council also passed Ordinance 5035, which updates the city's contract numbering system, in a 7-0 vote. The consent agenda, including $1,306,507.41 in claims, was approved unanimously.

Other recent meetings

The Planning Commission met Aug. 11 to consider updates to the Critical Areas Regulations and the Shoreline Master Program, including a best available science review and a gap analysis. The commission also approved minutes from its July 14 meeting. No decisions were made; the items remain under review.

The Parks & Recreation Advisory Commission and the Arts Commission both cancelled their August meetings. No business was conducted.

The City Council has a meeting scheduled for Aug. 17, but minutes have not yet been published. The agenda includes approval of claims totaling $692,793.67, contract awards for water treatment plant coating and fire detection services, an amendment to the School Resource Officer interlocal agreement, and a discussion on a contract for the design of a maintenance storage building at the water treatment plant.

The City Council will meet Aug. 24. The agenda includes approval of claims totaling $529,526.23, an interlocal agreement with Skagit County for grant funding for a Port/City event facility, a presentation on the city's budget process, a police officer swearing-in, and a closed session on collective bargaining. The meeting is open to the public.

Anacortes Council approves $1.2M trail grant, skate park contract

The Anacortes City Council approved a $1.2 million Safe Routes to School grant for a multimodal trail and sidewalk project on 22nd Street at its Aug. 3 meeting. The council also approved a contract for the Ben Root Skate Park restroom and parking lot, and passed an ordinance consolidating city funds.

City Council actions (Aug. 3)

The council unanimously approved the $1.2 million no-match grant for the 22nd Street trail project between M Avenue and J Avenue. It also unanimously approved contract #25-136-PRK-004 with Colacurcio Brothers, Inc. for the Ben Root Skate Park restroom and parking lot project.

Ordinance 5034, which consolidates funds 101, 102, and 103 into the General fund and establishes construction fund 301, passed 7-0. The consent agenda, including minutes and claims totaling $434,096.90, was approved unanimously.

Forest Advisory Board (Aug. 6) – Agenda only; no minutes published. The board is scheduled to discuss a cone collection request from the Skagit Conservation District and receive updates from the Friends of the ACFL and the Parks Commission.

Anacortes Council adopts personal transportation device rules, approves contracts

The Anacortes City Council on July 27 adopted an ordinance updating rules for personal transportation devices and approved several contract modifications for city projects. The ordinance, passed 7-0, replaces the category "Motorized Scooters" with "Personal Transportation Devices" in city code.

Anacortes Council Approves $909,254 in Claims and Six Special Events; Streetscapes, Budget Amendments on the Table

The Anacortes City Council unanimously approved $909,254.38 in claims and payments and greenlit six community special events at its July 6 meeting, the only fully documented council action in the past two weeks.

City Council — July 6

The council approved its consent agenda by unanimous voice vote, covering June 22 meeting minutes, $909,254.38 in routine claims and payments, and six special events scheduled in Anacortes this year: Bike MS, the Anacortes Half-Marathon & 5K, Halloween 2026, Veterans Parade Events of 2026, Elves Night Out, and the Walk with Santa Parade. Committee reports touched on tax updates, software upgrades, housing funding requests, water conservation guidance, and planned public safety rule changes, but no additional actions were taken.

City Council — July 13 (Special and Regular Meetings)

The council held a special meeting on July 13 for an executive session to evaluate the qualifications of a public employment applicant. Minutes have not yet been published, so no outcome is available.

City Council — Monday, July 20: The council is set to approve $1,120,658.96 in claims and minutes from the July 13 meeting. A swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Chief Mannix McDonnell and several firefighters, including a promotion of David Gettmann to lieutenant. The council will also receive a Quarter 2 all-department update for discussion.
