Amityville board approves $574K bike path payment, police vehicle

The Amityville Board of Trustees unanimously approved a $574,421.90 payment to Laser Industries for the bicycle/pedestrian path at its Aug. 10 meeting, along with a new police vehicle and a slate of licenses and permits. All items passed 4-0. The board also held a public hearing on a proposed local law regarding landscaping vehicle signage but took no action on it.

• $41,824.50 for a 2026 Dodge Durango for the police department
• New landscaper licenses for Mike's Landscaping & Design and Devito Landscape Contractors
• An ice cream vendor license for Ahmet Dursun
• New trailer storage permits for Finn's Marina LLC and RS 777 LLC
• Renewal of trailer storage permits for four businesses
• Temporary storage containers for two residents
• The PBA Ragamuffin Parade on Oct. 17 and soccer field use for the fall season

All votes were 4-0.

Special meeting — Aug. 20 (agenda only)

The board has scheduled a special meeting to consider appointments and payments. Minutes have not yet been published, so these items are proposed, not final:

• Appoint Eric Taylor as Zoning Board of Appeals chair, Joseph Ronzo to fill the remaining term, and Maureen Howard as alternate
• Appoint three new Amityville Fire Department members, including a residency waiver for Phoebe Narcisse
• Pay $266,017.32 to NYS Employee Health Insurance for monthly health benefits
• Pay $21,817.67 to Hi-Tech Fire & Safety for five sets of turnout gear
• Pay $6,966.59 to DSS Security for cameras and key fobs at Bennett Place FH

Zoning Board of Appeals — Aug. 20 (agenda only)

The Zoning Board of Appeals will hear five applications for special exceptions, use variances, and multiple variances. No decisions have been made yet. The requests include:

• A 6-foot wood fence special exception at 19 Folkstone Road
• A 10-foot wood fence special exception at 292 Merrick Road
• A two-family dwelling renewal at 122 Oak Street
• Five variances for a FEMA-compliant house lift and expansion at 7 Unqua Place
• Three variances for a 37,805-square-foot commercial addition on East Bayview Avenue

Each request involves setback, height, or parking rules in residential and mixed-use districts.

Amityville's village boards had a busy stretch this month, with the Board of Trustees, Planning Board, and Zoning Board of Appeals all convening. Board of Trustees — July 13

The Board of Trustees agenda included several budget modifications and vendor payments involving public safety.

The largest single item was a budget modification for the retirement payout of Police Officer Joseph Slack, listed at $177,020.40. The agenda also included a proposed purchase of a 2027 22-foot SeaPro boat for $97,190.00, intended for the fire department.

Two new police officers — William M. Gordon and Collin Mullin — were on the agenda for appointment at $42,000 each.

A payment of $259,668.67 to the New York State Employees Health Insurance Account was also listed.

The board scheduled a public hearing on Introductory Local Law No. 2 of 2026, which would set terms for storage trailer licenses in the village.

Planning Board — July 9

The Planning Board held a public hearing on three continuing applications.

• A revised sign variation for a CVS branding sign, filed by Arlene Meli of Ultimate Signs & Designs Corp., for the northeast corner of County Line Road and Merrick Road (20 Merrick Road).
• An amendment to a previous approval for a new one-family dwelling at 21 Norman Avenue, on the west side, 244 feet south of Richmond Avenue.
• A site-plan and architectural review for a new commercial building by 44 Merrick Holding LLC, at the northwest corner of Merrick Road and Ketcham Avenue (44 Merrick Road).

Each request sought approval under the Village of Amityville Code sections cited in the agenda.

Zoning Board of Appeals — July 16

The Zoning Board of Appeals was set to consider five variance and special-exception applications:

• A variance for a 37,805-square-foot commercial addition at 333 Bayview Avenue.
• A variance to convert a motor vehicle storage facility into an indoor sports facility at 249 Broadway.
• A variance for a 644-square-foot accessory structure at 8 Belmont Court.
• A variance for a 6-foot vinyl fence at 130 Riverside Avenue.
• A special-exception renewal for outdoor storage at 63 Maple Place.
